Philadelphia Union v Atlanta United: No margin for error with playoffs in sight, says Curtin

Jim Curtin knows Philadelphia Union have no margin for error as they chase a playoff spot, with Atlanta United next up for them in MLS.

The Union are currently ninth in the Eastern Conference, having put together big back-to-back wins against New York City FC (5-1) and D.C. United (4-0) in their last two matches.

They have now won three of their last four matches in the league, but Curtin warned his players that they cannot ease off the pressure until their playoff spot is secured.

Every game is must win now. There s no margin for error for any team that isn t above the red line comfortably, Curtin said.

The home games always become really critical. We ve had a tough schedule, but all these points matter because anything could be the difference.

Arteta critcises Arsenal for making Zurich win ´difficult´ in closing stages

Mikel Arteta lamented Arsenal making the closing stages difficult in the 1-0 win over Zurich that sealed Europa League Group A top spot on Thursday.

The Gunners registered their ninth home win in as many games across all competitions this season, their longest such run at the start of a campaign since 2009-10 (11), after Kieran Tierney s first-half winner.

Arsenal also kept a clean sheet in all three of their home group games in Europe for the first time since the 2008-09 Champions League, owing to a resolute defensive performance at Emirates Stadium.

Arteta suggested his side were at fault in the latter parts of the game, though, bemoaning the hosts for inviting pressure on themselves as Adria Guerrero saw a second-half equaliser disallowed.

Charlotte FC v Portland Timbers: Hosts target 90-minute display as Neville rues slow starts

Adilson Malanda says Charlotte FC are working to deliver a full 90-minute performance against the Portland Timbers on Saturday, having seen plenty of points slip away from them late on this year.

Dean Smith s team have slipped to 11th in the Eastern Conference by winning just one of their last five games, drawing one and losing three.

They conceded a 90th-minute winner in last week s 2-1 loss to New York City FC, and late concessions also cost them in a 1-1 draw with FC Cincinnati and a 1-0 defeat at Toronto FC in March.

Defender Malanda says they have focused on setting that right in training this week, explaining: We know that s one of our problems right now, which we need to fix.

We cannot keep giving up goals like that at the end of games. It can ki…

Man United ‘very disappointed’ as Aston Villa punishment leads to Conti Cup exit

Manchester United have questioned the decision by an independent tribunal to allow Aston Villa to continue in the Conti Cup despite fielding an ineligible player.

Villa admitted the charge after Noelle Maritz came on as a substitute in their 7-0 win over Sunderland, despite having played for Arsenal in a previous round.

The tribunal decided to deduct Villa’s three points and award the game to Sunderland, with the consequence that United lose their status as one of two best runners-up.

Jurgen Klopp reflected on his special stint in charge of Liverpool ahead of his final game on Sunday.

Klopp will manage Liverpool for the last time when the Reds take on Wolves in their final Premier League match of the season.

While this season s Premier League title challenge ultimately fizzled out, Klopp used his programme notes to laud his players and staff for their efforts.

He wrote: If space allowed I could write name after name of people who I need to thank but there has never been a match programme of this size, so I will have to be more general. I cou…
